1. Cash flow is important. Try to keep as much cash flow as possible in the business. Meaning any purchases that will require debt need to be justified to generate the required cash flow upon purchasing them. If the item purchased cannot generate cash, then the item will need to be delayed.

2. Budget is king. Keep your budget and income statement alive. Meaning maintain your budget and expenses and perform periodically once a month a budge to help you see where you are at and what the projections will be. Don’t forget to add your salary and personal expenses as this is sometimes a silent killer.

3. Examine your expenses. Examine your current expenses and see what can be cut down. For example, a cleaning company in many cases is a must for a business like a restaurant but is it really necessary for office cleaning to be done for an office? It’s a good to have but not a necessity. Can it be cut down? Can you cut down on other unnecessary expenses?

4. Renegotiate your debt structure. If you have both long and short term debt, try renegotiating your short term debt by taking out from the long term hence reducing your short term payments. This is a great way to increase cash flow and be able to make your payments.
5. Consider a partner. Perhaps many of us don’t want to share the business and profits with anyone, but isn’t it better to have some income than non. If you business is in desperate need of financial flow and you are in trouble, having a partner with the right experience and money can help save the business.

6. Talk to your banker. Best thing to do in such situations is to talk to your banker and check if there is some load or lowering payment would be an option. They usually are open to helping you since they want to recover their losses and its to their benefit your business excels and not fails.

7. Be clear about your objectives. Maintain a focus and clarity when addressing business problems. Tackling it from a calm and linear approach will not only help come up with viable solutions better but also bring in ideas that you never thought possible. Take a walk on the beach or a weekend somewhere and think clearly. What doesn’t break you will only make you stronger.
